This month was very exciting for the 3D Tiles ecosystem. We collaborated with Uber to bring support for 3D Tiles to Uber’s open source visualization tool, loaders.gl. This makes 3D Tiles accessible to many more platforms, including Uber’s data visualization engine, deck.gl.

With the Cesium code, the Uber Visualization team hopes to render 3D datasets quickly and seamlessly. “We created 3D Tiles to help companies like Uber make their massive 3D geospatial datasets more useful and accessible,” said Cesium CEO Patrick Cozzi in a statement. “We’re proud to collaborate with the Uber Engineering team to expand the 3D Tiles ecosystem with this open-source initiative.”

Cesium ion updates
We just released three new 3D Tilesets on the Cesium ion asset depot as part of our partnership with Vricon, while extending extending the trial period for some of the previous datasets. This includes a photogrammetry 3D Tileset of Washington State dataset, which is one of the largest 3D Tilesets we’ve made available on the asset depot so far, covering an area of over 60,000 square kilometers. This month we’ve got our eye on UsPLM, which uses Cesium to support drone fleet management in two interesting ways.
The first application you probably guessed: their 3D Mission Review takes advantage of Cesium’s 3D time dynamic capabilities to replay drone flights. Cesium is uniquely designed for this sort of data, so it’s easy for users to see where a drone was at any point on a mission, and to identify any issues.

The second you may not been at the top of your mind: UsPLM’s Asset Review displays glTF drone model with Cesium, giving users high-res 3D digital twins. Users can check out the drone’s key components, review aggregate performance over historical missions, and find maintenance advisories.
