How are apps & end users counted?
All Cesium ion plans have no limit to the number of apps and end users for your apps. You can
build as many CesiumJS applications as you would like that use the same Cesium ion account for
streaming 3D assets. There is also no limit to the number of unique end users that utilize your
All of usage generated by your apps and end users just need to fit into the usage limits of
your Cesium ion account.
What is the Storage (GB) limit?
Storage is only counted for source assets that you upload to Cesium ion, e.g., if you upload
terrain or imagery that Cesium ion tiles for streaming to CesiumJS Storage is computed using
the source asset size, not the generally larger size after tiling.
Assets already included in Cesium ion such as Cesium World Terrain and Sentinel-2 Imagery do
not count toward the Storage limit.
What is the Bing Maps Sessions limit?
Loosely, a session is defined by loading a CesiumJS app, creating a new CesiumJS window, or
selecting Bing Maps imagery in a CesiumJS app using the Imagery Selector Widget.
Precisely, a session is defined by a call to
CesiumJS, which happens when
Cesium.Viewer is created.
Cesium ion’s default imagery is provided by Microsoft Bing Maps so it does not count toward your
ion Data Streaming limit. You do not need a separate Bing Maps account.
If you need to reduce your session usage, consider using the Sentinel-2 Imagery tileset, a
lower-resolution tileset that only counts towards your Data Streaming limit. This may be
especially useful for development use and unit tests.
What is the Data Streaming (GB / month) limit?
Data Streaming is computed as the total data downloaded, e.g., streamed, from 3D assets in your
Cesium ion account in a month. This includes assets you upload as well as assets included in
Cesium ion such as Cesium World Terrain and Sentinel-2 Imagery.
Bing Maps usage does not count toward your Data Streaming limit; it only counts toward your
Bing Maps Sessions limit.
For example, a CesiumJS app that zooms in close to the Grand Canyon and pans throughout the
area may stream 16 MB from Cesium World Terrain. Test your scenarios with a tool such as
Chrome DevTools Network tab.
Data Streaming does not include downloading source assets.
What if my Cesium ion account goes over one of the limits?
If you try to upload an asset that would make your account exceed the Storage limit, the user
interface lets you know.
We work with "soft limits" for Data Streaming. This
means we will continue to stream data to your account even if it exceeds the monthly Data Streaming limit. But we ask that you
monitor your usage (which can be done from within your ion account under
Usage) and make plans to upgrade to the next highest
tier once you start exceeding the monthly Data Streaming limit. Repetitive excess usage and/or extreme overage without
taking action to upgrade could result in our need to take action to stop streaming.
