Watch the Tenth Red Bull X-Alps Live with Cesium

The Red Bull X-Alps 2021 race starts this week, and you can watch it from anywhere in the world with a live tracking app built on CesiumJS.

The World’s Toughest Adventure Race is an incredibly intense endurance race through the Alps. When they can, athletes paraglide; otherwise they are running or climbing a route that takes them through many of Europe’s highest mountains.

Given the terrain, there’s not a lot of roadside fans cheering on the athletes. Instead, the best way to follow the action is with the Live Tracking built by zooom productions with CesiumJS. In fact, because the race has always supported remote fans, it wasn’t disrupted by the pandemic like so many other events have been.

Hannes Maier, Head of Digital at zooom productions, explained why they selected Cesium:

"Providing live updates in a 3D environment is a critical part of our race planning. Cesium allows us to deliver an unrivaled digital experience for audiences on any browser or device around the world."

With the app, fans can follow the race online, including seeing athletes’ current GPS position together with detailed terrain models, as well as statistics about athletes’ speed and altitude. The custom-built app uses Esri's World Imagery, which can be served in Cesium through the interoperability of the Cesium and Esri platforms.
