Danny Williams Joins the Cesium Team as Vice President of Business Development and Sales Operations
Over the past year our company has doubled in size as we’ve grown to meet the demand for building immersive experiences with 3D geospatial data, enabled by 3D Tiles. As our business opportunities grow, we are able to invest more deeply in all aspects of the Cesium ecosystem, including our work with open source and open standards.
To meet these opportunities, we’re thrilled to welcome Danny Williams to Cesium as Vice President of Business Development and Sales Operations. He’ll work closely with our business development team to serve the needs of our current and potential customers.
To help everyone get to know Danny, we sat down to talk about his approach to business development.
Patrick: We’ve known each other for several years through the geospatial and Modeling & Simulation communities. What attracted you to join the Cesium team?
Danny: I've been immersed in the simulation industry for nearly 20 years, spending a significant part of my early career building 3D terrain databases for simulation applications. This was a time-consuming, complex, and costly process. When Cesium emerged, it revolutionized the workflow for incorporating geospatial data into these types of applications. My early experiences made me keenly aware of the transformative impact Cesium could have. During my time at Epic Games, I had the pleasure of working closely with a handful of the Cesium team. When I saw this position, I knew it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.
Patrick: As part of Epic Games when Cesium for Unreal was released, you had an up-close perspective on the impact of geospatial and game engine technology coming together. Today what opportunities are you most excited about with the convergence of real-time 3D and geospatial data?
Danny: The convergence of real-time 3D and geospatial data opens up a world of possibilities. I saw this in my past work in the simulation industry, where realistic environments are crucial for effective training and planning. But what really excites me is all of the other industries where we see Cesium being leveraged. Industries from architecture to media and entertainment to smart construction have all realized the benefit of bringing real world geospatial data into their applications. The democratization of this capability across a wide range of industries is amazing to see and something I’m excited to have the opportunity to contribute to.
Patrick: Cesium has an abundance mentality where we want to grow the pie for all. Can you share your philosophy on win-win business development?
Danny: My philosophy toward business development is rooted in creating value for all parties involved. I believe in building strong, collaborative relationships where the goals and visions of both our partners and our company are aligned. Cesium has built an amazing community of users that are engaged and willing to provide early product feedback. I love the idea of being able to engage with this community to ensure that we’re providing the best value we can for the challenges they’re facing.
Patrick: Is there anything else you would like to share with the community?
Danny: I'm incredibly excited to join Cesium and to work alongside such a talented and passionate team. My experience in the simulation industry has shown me the transformative power of advanced visualization and data integration, and I’m eager to apply that knowledge here. I look forward to meeting and collaborating with many of our customers as we continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible with 3D geospatial technology. Thank you for welcoming me to the team, and I’m eager to get started on this journey with all of you.
